When to Fertilize First lawn fertilizer application should be mid-April when the grass has started to grow. Second application if needed should be done 4 weeks later in mid-May or early June. The amount of fertilizer you use will depend on the size of the lawn. If you have a small lawn, you should avoid excessive use of fertilizers. This can be harmful to the soil and the grass seedlings. SPRING application of fertilizer is important to give your lawn the kick start it needs to grow. Generally, you want to apply your fertilizer when the soil begins to warm and you see signs of new growth from your grass. When picking a fertilizer, look at the 3 number analysis on the bag that represents nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium respectively. For example, 20-5-10 means your fertilizer contains 20% nitrogen, 5% phosphorous, and 10% potassium. In spring, look for something with a higher nitrogen content, and lower phosphorus and potassium content.
Fall / Winter Fertilizing schedule starts the third week of September until mid October. The fall lawn fertilization strategy is important. Your Grass is switching from leaf growth production to root growth and carbohydrate storage. This will continue until the soil temperatures reach into the -1's. The same amount of photosynthesis is going on, but instead of blade growth, it is focusing more on root growth and energy storage. With cool-season grass, the fall is the most vital time to fertilize your lawn.
We use environmentally friendly fertilizer that is safe for humans and your pets.
Before over-seeding your lawn, cut your grass at the lowest mower setting. After mowing, rake the lawn to help loosen the top layer of soil and remove any dead grass and debris. This will give the grass seed easy access to the soil so the roots can easily take hold after beginning to sprout. Add a quarter-inch layer of enriched soil over your lawn to protect and help settle the seed. Don't put so much down that you kill your existing grass; less than a quarter of an inch is plenty. Lawn soil improves moisture retention, helping your grass seed grow strong for a thicker, healthier lawn.
Most homeowners over seed to correct thin lawns. Commercial lawn care professionals over seed to prevent thinning. The best time to over seed the lawn is mid April or mid September. If you are unable to do so in early spring, you can choose to do it in the Fall.
Autumn and spring are often the best time to over seed the lawn. Grass seeds germinate and grow best when the daytime temperature is around 10°C. If the overnight temperature creates heavy frost, germination is not possible. The seeds take one to three weeks to germinate.
When over seeding lawns, apply a starter fertilizer after or before seeding. Water the lawn immediately after you complete the over seeding process. It is best to water the lawn at least three to four times daily. New over seeded lawns need constant moisture. Moist soil and seeds create the ideal conditions necessary for germination. Keep the lawn well-watered for at least the first few weeks. This will ensure proper germination and growth.
The seeds should never get completely dried out. When the grass seed is well established you can choose to water the lawn less. Too much water after germination will kill the grass seedlings. The amount of water that you need to provide will often depend on the weather condition in your area. If it is hot and dry, you will have to water the lawn at regular intervals.
Watering Recommendations in Mississauga
There are no mandatory watering restrictions in the Mississauga area, and the rest of the Peel Region. At times during the summer, there may be limitations or restrictions in place based on water supply and infrastructure repairs that may need to be accounted for. Refer to the Peel Region Outdoor Watering Information page for up-to-date information.
Deeper and Less Frequent Watering: Instead of frequent shallow sprinklings, provide your lawn with a deep soak less often. This encourages deeper root
